The collection of 3-D point clouds with laser scanners has become an important adjunct to traditional surveying.
A point cloud will contain the objects that are to be surveyed, but the entire area around the objects will also be scanned. A typical application would be where a client subsequently requires more objects to be surveyed than was first requested. These can then be plucked out of the point cloud without having to carry out extra fieldwork.
Projects can also comprise only of products generated from point clouds, e.g. TruView models. TruView is a free plug-in for Internet Explorer. The software is used to visualise point clouds in 3-D, as well as in conducting simple surveying and “mark-up” drawing.
